WPI is in the early stages of its open education initiative, which is a collaborative effort among a few departments, including the Gordon Library and Academic Technology, to develop faculty support services for adopting, adapting, and creating OER. During the 2019-20 academic year, a faculty learning community (FLC) on OER was convened, with five faculty working on grant-funded OER projects.

The FLC includes five faculty working on OER creation projects in the areas of philosophy, interdisciplinary & global studies, mechanical engineering, and computer science. The FLC is facilitated by two WPI librarians who have expertise in OER and faculty development, and two instructional designers sit on the FLC to provide support and guidance. The group meets on a monthly basis to have discussions around OER and share project progress.
