Overview

The University of Texas at Austin is a large, research-intensive, public university, and is the flagship school of the University of Texas System. The state of Texas is moving towards greater emphasis on open educational resources (OER) with the passage of SB 810 in 2017. SB 810 aims to make it easier for students at higher education institutions to discover classes using OERs. At UT Austin, the Center for Open Educational Resources in Language Learning (COERLL) is leading the way in OER adoption and promotion. The UT Libraries have teamed up with representatives from COERLL and interested faculty on campus to improve education and outreach around OER.

OER Outreach Working Group

The OER Outreach Group was formed in spring 2018 and is comprised of librarians and professional staff from across campus, along with one faculty representative. The goals of the group are to determine campus gaps in understanding about OER, look at peer institution practices and services, create resources and form communities to help address information deficiencies, and plan for outreach to campus partners. As of July 2019, the group has started focusing entirely on outreach to campus. Our major areas of effort include twice yearly half-day OER workshops and working with student government on OER support legislation. The primary partners for the OER Outreach Working Group are UT Libraries, the Center for OER and Language Learning (COERLL), and Texas Digital Library.

OER Events

OER Workshop

We have offered a half-day event sponsored by UT Libraries three times now. Workshops have been intended primarily for faculty and other instructors on campus. Goals of the workshops include: have participants learn to define OER with reference to a Creative Commons license, describe OER characteristics and benefits to specific audiences, and be able to locate OER relevant to their disciplines, understand Creative Commons licenses and how to remix/reuse CC licensed content, and know how to share content they may create. The events are free, but registration is required.
