Overview

In 2015-16, a University-wide exploratory task force composed of members from the University Libraries, Computing & Information Technology (C&IT), and the Office for Teaching and Learning established the inaugural Open Textbook Adoption Award, funded by C&IT, to incentivize faculty adoption of quality open textbooks.

This award has been continued through 2017-18 by the Office of the Provost, C&IT, and the University Libraries.

A working group of librarians, informally called “Open Textbook Curators,” has been formed to continue the work of the task force to highlight open education and facilitate the adoption of OER on campus.

Open Textbook Adoption Award

Wayne State University encourages all instructors to consider adopting an Open Textbook for their course. An award of up to $1,000 to support the adoption of an Open Textbook may be granted. Other amounts may be considered for adoption for multi-sectioned courses.

Proposals will be awarded based upon:

  1. Quality and strength of application and how well it meets the requirements
  2. Potential savings to Wayne State University students (based on historical course enrollment numbers and current text costs)
  3. Ability to be implemented in next academic year
  4. Accessibility and usability of the resource for all students

All award recipients will be asked to share their experiences of open textbook adoption. Award recipients may be asked to provide class time for a student evaluation of the Open Textbook.

This award is funded by the Office of the Provost, Computing & Information Technology, and the University Libraries.
