Overview

Founded in 1887, McMaster University is one of only five Canadian universities (and one of only two in Ontario) consistently ranked among the top 100 in the world by the major global ranking systems.

A medical-doctoral, research-intensive university, McMaster is dedicated to teaching, learning and service. McMaster is home to more than 70 research centres and institutes and is comprised of six faculties: The DeGroote School of Business, and the Faculties of Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Science, and Social Sciences.

With a total full-time student population of more than 31,000, McMaster welcomes students from 107 countries as well as Canada.

The McMaster University Library supports the University's research and teaching mission by advancing knowledge and discovery, inspiring creativity and building community. We deliver innovative services, welcoming spaces and exemplary collections to accelerate research, enhance learning and improve the user experience.

In 2017-2018, one of the Library's strategic initiatives concerned Open Educational Resources. The Library was to take a lead role in building understanding and raising awareness of the advantages of using OER with a special focus on free (open) textbooks. An OER Working Group was formed with membership from across campus, including librarians, students, faculty and campus store staff. In Fall 2017, the Group re-formed as an OER Committee with a Terms of Reference. Projects include the publication of an OER by Discipline Guide: McMaster University, to help instructors find suitable OER for their courses. The McMaster OER Grant Pilot Project was launched in spring 2020 and will continue through to spring 2023.
