Lehman College serves the Bronx and surrounding region as an intellectual, economic, and cultural center. As a senior college in the City University of New York, Lehman College has proven to be effective at propelling graduates from low-income families into the middle class.
In Fall 2016, the Leonard Lief Library began efforts to raise awareness and adoption of OER within Lehman College. Three faculty were part of the pilot program to adopt OER. The program expanded with the infusion of funding from New York State for OER initiatives. Faculty submit proposals regarding how they plan to redesign their courses with OER and then participate in professional development workshops around OER and related topics. The initiative is driven by faculty interest and aims to reduce textbook costs for students and to rethink course design and pedagogy. The most recent iteration of the initiative also includes the creation of OER, which expands the initiative beyond the adoption and remixing that has occurred to date.
