Overview

Drake University is a private academic library located in Des Moines, IA. In recent years, Drake, along with others, has become increasingly concerned about the burden that unsustainable textbook costs have placed on its students. Drake’s Cowles Library has undertaken efforts to encourage the use of affordable educational resources (AER) and open educational resources (OER). Library and teaching faculty have presented on AER/OER at the University’s annual Learning Symposium in recent years. The library’s OER “point of contact” is a 2020 graduate of the SPARC “Open Education Leadership Program,” and is also a member of the Iowa OER Action Team (this group is a member of the Midwestern Higher Education Compact, or MHEC). In the fall of 2018 Drake University fielded the Ithaka S+R Faculty Survey. Survey results show that there is fairly significant interest in using OER at Drake (and a number of faculty have already done so), but most feel that it is difficult to locate OER and that they do not have the institutional training and support do adopt OER. The library is making the advancement and adoption of AER/OER one of its strategic priorities for 2021. The library hopes to partner with other private academic libraries in the state to advance OER programming.
