Overview

In February 2019, Oakland University (OU) Libraries launched an Affordable Course Materials Initiative (ACMI) with the endorsement of the Provost and a modest budget. This initiative developed from the work done by an OER Task Force for the College of Arts and Sciences which was instrumental is getting the College Assembly to pass a motion in support of OER in January 2018, the OU Faculty Senate to pass a motion in support of an affordable textbook initiative, in March 2018, and OU Student Congress to pass an OER resolution and present it to the Board of Trustees, in April 2018. The ACMI was drafted and submitted to the Provost by Oakland University Libraries, which leads the ACMI Team.

The ACMI Team goals are to increase the use of affordable course materials by OU faculty and to ensure current policies and practices related to course material selection, purchasing and notification of selections are student-centered to guarantee student choice and best possible economic savings. Members of the ACMI Team are working to secure funding for faculty grants, developing a faculty survey about current practices and knowledge of OER, and are leading an OER Faculty Learning community for the 2019-2020 academic year.
