Our institution is committed to making courses more accessible to our students. In the library we have implemented a policy that requires us to purchase or source out every required course textbook for our reserves program. We are also starting to work with faculty to increase the awareness of OERs as well as pointing them towards alternatives.

The OER Stipend Program at Bates provides faculty with financial compensation for either writing peer-reviews for textbooks on the Open Textbook Library or for adopting OER in their courses. One of the most common issues faculty have with OER is the lack of peer-reviews. By providing a review of an OER you will be contributing to the community effort to remedy this issue. Funding for this stipend program was provided by a grant from the Davis Educational Foundation established by Stanton and Elisabeth Davis after Mr. Davis's retirement as chairman of Shaw's Supermarkets, Inc.

Event Summary
A one-day symposium, focusing on the creation and use of open educational resources (OER) in higher education. The workshop provided ways professionals can begin to engage with and participate in OER creation and adoption. Open education seeks to create a more accessible and equitable classroom. The ultimate goal of the day was to raise awareness and seed a conversation about how to address the issue of textbook affordability for students. We hope to share information of OER use at the institutional and regional level. Funding for this workshop was provided by a grant from the Davis Educational Foundation established by Stanton and Elisabeth Davis after Mr. Davis’s retirement as chairman of Shaw’s Supermarkets, Inc.
