Overview

Since mid-2015 an informal group of stakeholders from across campus, currently led by the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and including the UNT Libraries Scholarly Communication Office, has met periodically to discuss how the university can support free or affordable alternatives to conventional textbooks and other course materials, while recognizing the many vested interests on campus in the current system. The Libraries also launched a pilot program to support open textbooks in late 2016, which included joining the Open Textbook Network and developing new open publishing platforms, including local instances of Open Journal Systems (OJS) and Pressbooks. At present we have three active journals, and two more in development. Our initiative now includes a collaborative partnership with UNT Press to publish open texts under a joint UNT Press/Libraries imprint, and a selective summer grants program to develop OER materials for UNT classes. The Libraries also sponsors and annual Open Access Symposium that includes presentations related to Open Access, OER, open data, and open pedagogy. Finally, the UNT Libraries maintains an active Open Access website and Twitter account, as well as LibGuides on Open Access and OER to provide updated information on these topics to faculty, students, and other stakeholders.
