Since mid-2015 an informal group of stakeholders from across campus, co-led by the UNT Libraries and UNT's learning enhancement office, has met periodically to discuss how the university can support alternatives to conventional textbooks while recognizing the many vested interests on campus in the current system. Recently, the group was involved in discussions around implementing the mandates of Texas Senate Bill 810, which requires all institutions of higher education to identify courses using OER in the official course schedule and bookstore lists. These requirements went into effect as of Spring 2018. The UNT Libraries also launched a pilot program on open textbooks in late 2016, which included joining the Open Textbook Network and brainstorming about ways that we might continue to promote open textbooks and evaluate effectiveness. Also in 2016, UNT's campus-wide Open Access Advisory Board, consisting of teaching faculty, administrators, and library faculty, was convened to study and promote Open Access to the campus community and to make policy recommendations to the administration. The OAAB considers OER within its scope of activities and may consider ways of promoting it to the faculty and administration. Finally, the UNT Libraries maintains an active Open Access website and Twitter account, as well as LibGuides on Open Access and OER. The Libraries also sponsors and annual Open Access Symposium that includes presentations related to OER.
