Overview

George Mason University is Virginia's largest public research university, with a vibrant and dynamic community of scholars that includes 34,000 students from all 50 states and 130 countries and a residential population of more than 6,000 students.

Mason supports efforts for Open Educational Resources to reduce the cost of instruction for students, improve teaching and learning outcomes, and create student economic opportunity through open access to quality educational resources. Mason 4-VA, in collaboration with the University Libraries and Mason Online, provides OER grants of $1,000–5,000 for projects on innovative course redesign that reconsiders the materials currently used with the intent purpose to integrate digital materials. Courses of particular interest are those that: have high enrollment numbers, are required courses for majors, count in the Mason Core, or carry high textbook costs.

Mason Publishing Group provides support and resources to the George Mason University community for creating, producing, and disseminating open textbooks and other open educational resources.

University Libraries, in conjunction with Deep Web Technologies, has developed the OER Metafinder — a federated search engine that simultaneously queries 18 different OER resource sites. The Metafinder significantly reduces the silo fatigue that can accompany OER discovery.
