Overview

Indian River State College (IRSC) has offered professional development opportunities to faculty on Open Educational Resources (OER) since 2013. The IRSC Libraries and the Virtual Campus at the College have offered these services to our faculty members, encouraging the usage of OER in online and face to face environments, as well as a variety of services for faculty to find, evaluate, and use OER in their courses. Through the IRSC Foundation faculty have applied for and received funding for three separate OER projects in 2015, 2016, and 2018. These projects provide funds for faculty to lead an OER project on-campus and have involved the Criminal Justice program, the Math department, the Libraries, and the Virtual Campus.

One project provided stipends for faculty to use OER in the classroom. Faculty involved in that program came from the departments of Biology, English, Criminal Justice, Education, and Healthcare Management. The collaboration between the Libraries and the Virtual Campus in efforts to support OER use has made it possible to offer 21 Quality Matters certified online courses that utilize OER in some way.
